Government has stipulated certain standards for discharge of Waste Water into environment for prevention and control of pollution. The general standards for discharge of Effluent in Inland Surface Water, Public Sewers, Land for Irrigation, Marine Coastal Area have been laid down in Environment Protection Rules, 1986.

Sampling and analysis of waste water is done in the in Waste Water Treatment Plants to find out whether the contaminants matters are removed as designed and check the efficiency of Plants. It is also done in locations of waste water discharge/ Drains, Sewers to make sure that the discharge standards are met.

Waste water discharge standards are specific to industry and place of discharge. Several parameters such as BOD, COD, TSS, pH, Oil and grease, Ammonia, Cr, Ni, Fe, Total metal etc are analysed.
