WATER POLLUTION CONTROL
Waste water generated from Industrial units often contains toxic chemicals, inorganic and organic contaminants which get discharged to water bodies and pollute them.
The Water (Prevention And Control Of Pollution) Act, 1974 was enacted by Govt for the prevention and control of water pollution and the maintaining or restoring of wholesomeness of water. According to this Act, No person shall, without the previous consent of the State Board,
(a) Establish or take any steps to establish any industry, operation or process, or any treatment and disposal system or an extension or addition thereto, which is likely to discharge sewage or trade effluent into a stream or well or sewer or on land
(b) Bring into use any new or altered outlets for the discharge of sewage
(c) begin to make any new discharge of sewage
The waste water from industrial unit needs to be minimized to prevent overutilization of water resources and treated to prevent the contamination of water bodies.
To meet the prescribed standards set up by Pollution Control Boards, Waste Water Treatment Plants such as Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), Oil and Grease Trap (OGT), Settling Chambers, Septic Tanks etc are installed depending upon the characteristics of waste water to be treated and extent of treatment required.
